A "heart" in the desert

10:56, August 25, 2026 People's Daily Online

Seen from above, Ulan Lake in the Tengger Desert of Inner Mongolia resembles a giant red heart, earning it the nickname “the Heart of the Earth.”

The lake’s striking red hue comes from natural pigments produced by algae in its salty waters, making it look like a ruby set within the vast desert sands.
