The year 2013 marked the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. Relations between the two countries grew fast across the spectrum.
The two sides maintained close high-level exchanges. In May, President José Alberto Mujica Cordano paid a working visit to China, had talks with President Xi Jinping and met with NPC Chairman Zhang Dejiang. Leaders of the two countries had in-depth discussions and reached important consensus on enhancing China-Uruguay traditional friendship and deepening exchanges and cooperation in all fields. The two sides signed six cooperation documents in economy and trade, education, telecommunications and other areas.
There were frequent exchanges in all areas. The 17th China-Uruguay Economic & Trade Mixed Commission took place in Uruguay. Tabaré Aguerre, Minister of Livestock Husbandry, Agriculture and Fishery, attended the China-Latin America and the Caribbean Agricultural Ministers' Forum in China. Political Commissar Zheng Weiping of the PLA Nanjing Military Area Command led a military delegation to Uruguay.
Cooperation in economy and trade made steady progress. Two-way trade maintained a growth momentum. China became Uruguay's largest trading partner and largest importer of its wool, soybean and beef. The first Geely car assembled in Uruguay came off the production line.
