Xi's commitment to the people: CPC must keep itself competent and strong

The Communist Party of China (CPC) must do a good job in undertaking a great struggle with many new contemporary features, effectively respond to various risks and challenges, achieve China's two centenary goals, realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation and keep itself competent and strong. Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks at the sixth plenary session of the 18th CPC Central Committee in October 2016.

China's success hinges on the CPC, especially on the Party's efforts to exercise effective self-supervision and full and rigorous self-governance.

Since the beginning of the new era, the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core has incorporated full and rigorous Party self-governance into the Four-Pronged Comprehensive Strategy.

Through continued efforts to advance the great new project of Party building in the new era, the CPC has tempered itself through revolution and grown stronger, guiding and ensuring steady progress in the endeavors of the Party and the country.

The cooperation between southeast China's Fujian Province and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwest China, which has lasted for 30 years, serves as a typical example of efforts to support poverty alleviation, promote coordinated regional development and advance collaboration between China's eastern and western regions.

It has demonstrated the political strengths of the CPC, as well as the superiority of China's socialist system.

In his recent instructions on steadily advancing cooperation between China's eastern and western regions, Xi called for efforts to draw on and apply the valuable experience gained from the cooperation between Fujian Province and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, boost coordinated regional development, and secure solid progress in advancing common prosperity for all.

Upholding the Party's leadership is the defining feature of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

The strength of the Party comes from its organizations. From the battle against poverty, through the five-year transition period to consolidate and expand poverty alleviation achievements and integrate them with rural revitalization, to the current stage of regular targeted assistance, Party organizations at all levels and Party members have responded immediately to calls from the CPC Central Committee, traveling to rural areas to carry out their work.

China has completed the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects and is now confidently marching on the new journey toward building a great modern socialist country in all respects and achieving national rejuvenation. These achievements are fundamentally attributed to Xi's leadership and the guiding role of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.

The "Two Establishments," namely establishing Comrade Xi Jinping's core position on the Party Central Committee and in the Party as a whole and establishing the guiding role of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, represent major political achievements made by the Party in the new era and are of decisive significance for advancing national rejuvenation.

The entire Party and all the Chinese people need to unite as "one piece of adamantine iron" under the banner of the Party and stay committed to the same goal in mind and action to steer the giant ship of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, braving winds and waves, toward its destination, Xi stressed in October 2022 while joining a group discussion with delegates from south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region who were attending the 20th National Congress of the CPC.

"We must stay true to our original aspiration and founding mission, and pursue our goal with perseverance and dedication. We should continue to give a good answer to the question on how to maintain long-term governance put forth in a cave dwelling in Yan'an and prove ourselves worthy of the people's expectation in the new era." These remarks by Xi in his 2026 New Year message demonstrated a profound sense of historical consciousness and great historical initiative.

Faced with the long-standing tests of governance, reform and opening up, the market economy and the external environment, and the dangers of a lack of drive, incompetence, disengagement from the people, inaction and corruption, the Party has never relaxed its efforts to exercise strict self-supervision and self-governance.

Less than a month after the conclusion of the 18th CPC National Congress, the CPC Central Committee introduced the eight-point decision on improving Party and government conduct.

As full and rigorous Party self-governance has continued to deepen, it has curbed many undesirable practices that were previously considered impossible to stop and eradicated long-standing problems that had persisted for years. This has ensured the Party remains the strong leadership core in building socialism with Chinese characteristics.

An important reason why the Party remains so vital and vibrant despite having undergone so many trials and tribulations is that it practices effective self-supervision and full and rigorous self-governance, Xi said while addressing a ceremony celebrating the CPC centenary in 2021.

In his recent reply letter to Zhang Liansheng, a veteran Party member who retired from Xinhua News Agency, Xi noted that Party members in the new era must carry forward the revolutionary traditions, stay true to the original aspiration, keep the mission firmly in mind, faithfully perform duties, take on responsibilities through concrete actions, and strive for outstanding accomplishments on the new journey.

Xi has repeatedly said that "the Chinese people's aspiration for a better life is the goal we strive for."

Since the beginning of the new era, Xi has traveled across China, turning his pledge to "fully commit to the people and never fail them" into countless heartwarming moments and smiles on people's faces.

The Recommendations of the CPC Central Committee for Formulating the 15th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development was adopted at the fourth plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee. Its statements on the guiding philosophy — a general requirement guiding economic and social development during the 2026-2030 period — highlight making solid headway in promoting well-rounded personal development and common prosperity for all, Xi said.

Currently, a Party-wide campaign is being carried out to guide CPC members, especially officials, in establishing and practicing a correct view on governance performance.

Party members and officials are continuously strengthening their ideals and convictions, remaining committed to taking concrete actions and achieving solid results, and transforming the outcomes of the campaign into the fruits of high-quality development.
