Bronze Mirror Depicting a Scene in the Moon Palace

Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 A.D.)

Crafted during the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 A.D.), this mirror depicts a vivid scene inside the legendary moon palace where the Chinese moon goddess Chang’e is flying in the sky, her long sleeves fluttering in the floating clouds. In addition, there is a luxuriant osmanthus tree, a rabbit with a pestle mixing medicine and a jumping toad, which all refer to famous incarnations of mythological moon spirits in Chinese folklore.
